AbSim is a fully automated, computer-guided abdominal simulator designed to support the development of abdominal palpatory skills and competencies through explicit computer-based instruction, immediate and individually tailored feedback to students, and multiple practice opportunities involving exposure to clinically realistic abnormal findings.

Unlike traditional abdominal trainers that require hands-on setup between cases, AbSim automatically transitions from one selected abdominal abnormality training activity to the next in approximately 10–15 seconds, helping learners and programs make better use of training time.

 AbSim continually monitors the depth of the learner’s palpatory efforts in real time and provides immediate feedback to improve examination technique.

 AbSim gives learners repeated opportunities to practice with self-selected abdominal findings, allowing them to focus on the specific abnormalities they need to develop confidence in detecting.

Because AbSim changes between cases automatically, there is no need to manually insert or adjust internal parts between activities. Learners can move efficiently between findings such as localized tenderness, guarding, and organ enlargement with minimal interruption.

Milestone 4

Self-Assessment Through Randomly Selected Abdominal Abnormalities

AbSim enables learners to self-assess their evolving capacity to detect randomly selected abnormal abdominal findings without knowing in advance what they will encounter.
This milestone challenges learners to distinguish among findings such as localized tenderness, tenderness with guarding, and organ enlargement across a range of anatomical locations and clinical presentations.

AbSim provides learners with case vignettes integrated with a variety of abnormal abdominal findings, helping them connect tactile exam findings with broader diagnostic reasoning.

This milestone supports the development of the learner's ability to correctly identify and diagnose common and important abdominal disorders by combining historical and physical findings in a structured learning experience.
